What is Range Velocity?

Range Velocity is the speed at which a person's range grows: the domains in which they can think, decide and produce, with AI as the amplifier.

It is the framework's growth dimension. It reads how fast and in which direction a person's range is moving, and it is reported beside the score.

Cognitive Range shows where a person's range stands. Range Velocity shows how it is moving.

Why does it matter?

Managers and learning functions tell people to upskill. Upskilling is one direction. A person can go deeper in their own field, move into a new one, or add and connect several.

What are the directions?

  • Deepening: depth grows in the home field. Classic upskilling.
  • Widening: width grows. New domains are added and connected.
  • Shifting: width first, then depth in the new domain, until it becomes the main work. Classic reskilling.
  • Deepening and widening: both grow, with the home field still the main work.
  • Stalled: no movement in either.
  • Eroding: depth in the home field weakens.

Two flags sit on top of a direction. Hollowing is width up while depth erodes: a person looks more capable on the surface while their own expertise thins underneath. Borrowed range is width up while ownership is low: the new domains exist only with AI's help. Neither flag is a direction and neither is a penalty.

What counts as growth?

  • Owned range, not borrowed range. Growth counts only as far as the person can explain what they built, change it without AI and judge whether it is right.
  • Realisation, not starts. AI makes starting nearly free. The dimension counts things that were built and are in use.
  • Behaviour, not belief. Questions ask what people did and when, never agreement with a statement.
  • Read against the starting point. AI amplifies the base it finds, so movement is always read against where the person started.

How is it read?

The reading runs from 0 to 100, and 35 is the no-change point. Below it, range is shrinking or nothing new is coming. Lag shows what actually changed. Lead shows where it is heading. The two are always shown separately.

What does an organisation see?

In groups of ten or more, Range Velocity gives four readings: growth movement, the direction profile, the hollowing share and the growth climate. The growth climate reads four conditions: stimulus, time, permission and safety, and route to use.

High climate with low movement says the programmes, or the fit between programmes and people, need attention. Movement that is strong while the climate is weak says people are growing in spite of the organisation, and it points to people the organisation may lose.

Who sees a person's result?

Individual results, directions and flags are private to the person. The organisation and its HR and learning functions see aggregates of ten or more.

Common questions about Range Velocity

What is Range Velocity?

Range Velocity is the speed at which a person's range grows: the domains in which they can think, decide and produce, with AI as the amplifier. It is the framework's growth dimension, and it is reported beside the score.

How is it different from Cognitive Range?

Cognitive Range shows where a person's range stands. Range Velocity shows how it is moving.

Does it change the Kaivant Score?

No. Range Velocity is reported beside the Kaivant-I Score and the Kaivant Score as its own reading, with its own lag, lead and direction, and never changes them.

What is hollowing?

Hollowing is width up while depth erodes: a person looks more capable on the surface while their own expertise thins underneath. It is a developmental signal, not a penalty.

What is growth climate?

Growth climate reads four conditions an organisation gives people to grow: stimulus, time, permission and safety, and route to use.

Who can see my result?

Only you. Individual results, directions and flags are private to the person. The organisation and its HR and learning functions see aggregates of ten or more.
